In celebration of Giving Day 2023, on February 23rd we are celebrating the many ways that we Show Our Love for Maclay and are thrilled to introduce this year’s Maclay Sweethearts.  These wonderful, heartfelt, and longstanding connections are part of what makes Maclay’s campus and our time together on it so special. We have many members of our community who come to work each day with their own Maclay “Sweethearts” and hope you will enjoy hearing their stories about their favorite memories together on campus.  #showyourloveformaclay

John:
What do you love most about Maclay?

Maclay is home. I went here as a student from kindergarten through 12th grade and have now worked here for 23 years.  You build great relationships over the years.  Maclay is like my family and home.

What is your favorite part about having your sibling on campus with you?
Having my sister Elizabeth right down in PreK is great.  I can go see her and her kids anytime I need a pick me up.  There is so much energy and fun in their room that you can’t help but feels better after a visit.

What is your favorite memory with your sibling at Maclay?
My sister’s daughter Mary played multiple sports over the years. Most afternoons we would be sitting together by the soccer field, the softball field, or the pool. My favorite was softball.  We had a great group of parents and all got along and just laughed and had a great time. My sister has a great sense of humor and it’s catching.

Do you have a favorite event/tradition/holiday that you enjoy celebrating at Maclay with your sibling?
I enjoy the PreK holiday sing along. They invite me each year and it’s so much fun to watch the kids sing all the songs they have learned. The teachers work very hard putting that program together and it’s so special.

Elizabeth:
What do you love most about Maclay?
I love that Maclay is a family. Even though we have grown over the last 50 years, we have kept a small, close sense of community. I graduated from Maclay in ’85, my brother John in ’93, and my daughter Mary in ’12. We all had some of the same teachers, which is really special.

What is your favorite part about having your sibling on campus with you?
I love having someone close by if I need him or if he needs me. I visit John Clayton in the Library when I go there, and he brings a Diet Coke to me in my classroom on extra rough days.

What is your favorite memory with your sibling at Maclay?
John went to every sporting event that Mary had over the many years…soccer, softball, swimming, and others. We were together almost every afternoon after school on some field somewhere at Maclay and on lots of road trips!

Do you have a favorite event/holiday that you enjoy celebrating at Maclay with your sibling?
John always comes to our traditional Pre-K Gingerbread Program and Party. He helps whoever needs help and steps in as their family. He also does this with Donuts for Dads if I have a student who doesn’t have someone with them.
