Maclay’s Head of School, James Milford announces Harold Hilliard as the new Director of Athletics effective July 1, 2020. Hilliard, who visited campus in mid-January was a top choice of the committee comprised of over 40 Middle and Upper School student-athletes, parents, faculty, and staff.
“With the news of the departure of Director von Scherrer, the school began a comprehensive look at our Athletic program and designed a job description with a very specific skillset and more importantly, a mindset for our next athletic leader,” Milford said. “Hilliard brings the right mix of experience, an eye for detail, child-centered approach, respect for what Maclay has accomplished, and a clear understanding of the potential and aspirations of the Marauder Athletic program.”
With the addition of Hilliard this summer, the Maclay Athletic Department will undergo a restructuring and refocusing within its administration, strength training, and physical education program. The new direction will include an enhancement of the student-athlete experience and parent partnership, athletic department engagement that spans from Lower School to Upper School, as well as a strength training program that focuses on individual student success, injury prevention, and performance improvement across all sports. Position descriptions will be posted on our website and referrals for qualified candidates that fit our culture of child-centeredness, professional excellence, and commitment to the mission are greatly welcomed.
“I am very grateful to Mr. Milford and the Maclay community for this incredible opportunity, and I am honored to be selected to lead such a prestigious athletic program,” Hilliard stated. “I look forward to getting to know each of the coaches, student-athletes, parents, and staff as we build upon the strong Marauder athletic foundation that has been developed over many years. I am excited to be part of the future of the program and my family and I am thrilled to be joining the Maclay community!”
Milford added. “We knew our next Athletic Director would be the one to guide Maclay through the next chapter of building a long-term facility enhancement plan and bringing all of our 50-plus sports teams up to a high–performance level whether a Middle School, Junior Varsity, or Varsity team. We are excited to find someone with Harold’s experience, leadership, and enthusiasm to champion this exciting new direction.”
Hilliard is originally from Georgia and will be joining us from Montgomery, Alabama. He has an Exercise Physiology undergraduate degree from Jacksonville State University and a Master's in Organizational Management Leadership from Shorter College. Hilliard holds the Nation’s highest credentials in Athletic Administration (CMAA) and in Strength and Conditioning (C.S.C.S*D and RSCC* E). For the past 24 years, he has worked in and led programs at The Lovett School (Atlanta), Whitefield Academy (Atlanta), and Trinity Presbyterian School (Montgomery). In addition to his history as an Athletic Director, Hilliard has extensive experience in adolescent strength training, sports medicine, and physical education. We look forward to welcoming Mr. Hilliard, his wife Christi, and their son, Hayden to the Maclay family.
Milford continued, “I’d like to thank the interview team members who participated in this important process. Over 40 members of our Maclay community took part in the process, and I believe we have found the right Director for Maclay School. From the Board of Trustees to the students, everyone's commitment to the time and seriousness of the task showed in conversations with the candidates on our amazing program and the thorough feedback from the interview teams. I know Mr. Hilliard will arrive at Maclay enthusiastically ready to take the helm of one of the top-ranked athletic programs in the State of Florida.”
