Named Endowment Funds


  • Maclay School encourages the establishment of endowed funds to support school programs. Endowed funds may be established to support scholarship, faculty salaries and professional development, and specific academic, athletic and co-curricular programs. The principal of the endowed funds remains invested and untouched in perpetuity, generally with percentage of the invested amount being used each year. Many donors choose to honor or memorialize a family member, friend or faculty member through the naming of endowed funds.

    While endowments are established through sizable initial gifts, they may grow through smaller, on-going gifts from supporters of the school. We are grateful to alumni, faculty and staff, parents, grandparents, trustees, and friends for establishing the funds listed below


    Financial Aid Funds

     

    ·         Eleanor T. and John Wyckoff Mettler, Jr. Memorial Fund

     

    The John W. Mettler, III Family, established this fund in February of 1990. Donations are given in memory of Eleanor T. and John W. Mettler. Mr. and Mrs. Mettler were two of the founders of Maclay School and donated the land where Maclay is now located. The purpose of the fund is to produce interest that may be used to fund need-based tuition supplements for students at Maclay who would not otherwise be able to attend the school.

     

    ·         Mayo Malone Woodward ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Fund

    In 1999, the Mayo Malone Woodward Fund was established in honor of Mayo Woodward’s thirtieth birthday. Mr. Woodward is an alumnus and devoted supporter. The scholarship, based on interest accrued, will be awarded annually to a student and applied toward his or her tuition. Preference is to be given to a student from Gadsden County.

     

    ·         Albert S. and Tayloe C. Lawton Memorial Fund

    In September of 1987, family and friends established this fund in memory of Albert S. Lawton, father of Marian Lawton Langford. The fund was renamed the Albert S. and Tayloe C. Lawton Scholarship Fund. The purpose of the fund is for interest earned to be split between the Marian Lawton Langford Library and the financial aid fund.

     

    ·         Owenby Family Fund

    The Owenby Family Scholarship Fund was established by the Owenby family. Begun in 1995, the purpose of the fund is to provide monetary resources to highly qualified students to support partial tuition payments to attend Maclay School. Scholarships wil be awarded based primarily upon financial need.

     

     

    Award Funds

     

    ·         Beau Barnawell Memorial Award Fund

    Established in memory of Thomas Franklin “Beau” Barnawell, Jr. ’96, by classmates, family and friends.  Beau used his talents as a theatre technician and actor to excel in The International Thespian Society. This theatre arts award is dedicated, in his memory, to honor a senior who shows the same degree of enthusiasm, dedication, and talent in theatre at Maclay.

     

    ·         Amy DeGrove Memorial Award Fund

    Established in memory of Amy Nicole DeGrove ’87, an individual whose brilliant smile and dedication to her art contributed positively to the Maclay community. This art award is dedicated in her memory to honor a student who shows the same degree of sensitivity, insight, and dedication in art classes at Maclay.

     

    ·         Erica Davey Memorial Award Fund

     

    The Erica Elizabeth Davey Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Erica Elizabeth Davey in October of 1996.  The purpose of the scholarship is to provide monetary resources for students in the senior class in the form of scholarships to support full or partial tuition payments to attend Maclay School.  Scholarships will be awarded based primarily upon the candidate’s noted ability to overcome an obstacle in life in the spirit demonstrated by Erica Elizabeth Davey.
     

    ·         John Burleigh Memorial History Award Fund

    The John Burleigh Memorial History Award Fund was established by friends and family in 2003 in memory of John R. Burleigh. Mr. Burleigh was a beloved history teacher at Maclay for 18 years. Two $100 awards are given each year to a 10th grader and 12th grader, both who demonstrate a love of history.

     

    ·         Bill and Ellen Jablon Award Fund

    Established in 2014 honoring the retirement of Bill Jablon, the Bill & Ellen Jablon Award is given each year to a graduating charter member of the Maclay senior class. The purpose of this award is to recognize a senior who has maintained a strong academic record, shown leadership and community service, excelled in extracurricular activities such as athletics or fine arts, and has been a loyal, contributing member of the Marauder Nation throughout his or her 12-plus years at Maclay. 
     

    ·         Will Douglass Memorial Journalism Award Fund

    In 2009, friends and family established the Will Douglass Memorial Journalism Award Fund in memory of William D. “Will” Douglass, III ’80. Each year a student on the yearbook staff is selected to receive this $250 award for excellence in journalism.

     

    ·         William Logan Boyd IV Memorial Award Fund

    The William Logan Boyd IV Scholarship Fund was established in May of 1998, in memory of Bill Boyd, parent of five Maclay alumni and staunch supporter. Each year, a $500 award is presented by the faculty to the one member of the sophomore class whose personal integrity and contributions to Maclay in the areas of leadership, academics, and athletics make him or her the outstanding sophomore. 

     

    Other Funds

     

    ·         Smith Family Charitable Trust Fund

    The Smith Family Charitable Trust established this fund in 2000, designated to the endowment to be maintained in perpetuity. The purpose of the trust was to build the endowment.

     

    ·         Fred and Marie Parker Memorial Fund

    In 2000, this music fund was established in honor of Julius Frederick Parker, Jr. and Marie Giddings Parker. The purpose of the Parker Music Fund is to provide monetary resources for the music department at Maclay School with an emphasis on classical piano. The interest earned from the Parker Music Fund will be used for honoraria for visiting performers to provide assemblies and master classes in music, with an emphasis on, but not limited to, classical piano. Other classical performers, both instrumental and choral, can be included.


    ·         Luke and Lewis Langford Athletic Fund

    Established in 2015 by Rob (‘78) and Jennifer Langford to honor their sons Luke (’15) and Lewis (’16), this fund was established to support athletic programs at Maclay School.

     

    ·         Robert C. Webster, Jr. Memorial Fund

    Established in June 2011 by friends, family, colleagues and former students in memory of Robert C. Webster, Jr. Mr. Webster was a dedicated educator at Maclay for 41 years and served as both vice-president and college counselor.

     

    ·         Sarah Cawthon Memorial Fund

    Established in loving memory of Sarah Payne Cawthon, mother of Sarah Cawthon Shaw, a former Maclay parent and grandparent.

     

    ·         Denny Bunn Memorial Fund

    Established in 2003 by friends and family in memory of Dennis Michael “Denny” Bunn. He was a beloved figure on the Maclay campus and served on the upper school faculty, swim coach, and founder of the nation’s first triathlon class.

     

    ·         William L Moor and Sarah H Moor CRUT

    Established in December 2010 with a bequest from Mr. and Mrs. Moor, former Maclay parents.

     

    ·         The Carl L. Owenby, Sr. and Ermine M. Owenby, Sr. Charitable Remainder Unitrust

    Established in February of 1997 with a bequest from Mr. and Mrs. Carl Owenby, Sr, former Maclay grandparents and dedicated friends.
