All Preschool and Lower School students participate in weekly General Music classes taught by a certified music educator. Students sing, move, play instruments, and explore the elements of music and various styles. There is a focus on teamwork, attaining long-term goals, and learning to give your best effort. Students take part in the creative process and participate in musical performances such as Grand People’s Day, The Grateful Gathering, and an interdisciplinary Musical Theater unit. Students in lower school also have the option to expand their musical experience beyond regular general music classes by participating in extracurricular offerings including Beginning Band (5th grade), Orchestra and Glee Club (vocal ensemble for 4th & 5th graders)
Middle School students who are interested in learning to play an instrument for the first time may take Exploratory Band or Beginning Strings, offered on the new rotating block schedule. Both are a semester long course. Middle school students who have previous experience playing an instrument may join the Maclay Band or Intermediate Orchestra, also offered on the rotating block schedule. Students that are enthusiastic about singing and would like to sing in an ensemble are encouraged to join the new Middle School Chorus class.
The Upper School Music Department at Maclay School has several offerings for students who are interested in instrumental music. Opportunities for participation include: Upper School Band, Maclay US Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and the Maclay Pep Band. These music ensembles perform several formal and informal concerts throughout the school year for the Maclay community and beyond.
